When coaching at the high school level the coach is presented with more than just the task of molding a group of players into a successful team. Only the upper echelon teams are fortunate enough to not have to worry that their second outside hitter may not be able to hit a certain set, that the starting setter is not as tall as you would like but is the best passer, or that your best option in the middle is 5’7.

The majority of coaches are not as fortunate. To get what you have never had you must do what you have never done. In order to have a team play up to their potential it at times requires the coach to use some unconventional concepts, that to some may appear to be crazy. These unorthodox concepts provide potential options to increase the success of a team.
